European Commission President Ursula von der lain said on Wednesday that the EU proposed to ban the import of Russian crude oil in the next six months and the import of refined fuels before the end of the year. "This will be a comprehensive import ban on all Russian oil, shipping and pipelines, crude oil and refined oil," she said in a speech to the European Parliament
"We will ensure that Rosneft is phased out in an orderly manner so that we and our partners can ensure alternative supply routes and minimize the impact on the global market."
People familiar with the matter said that Hungary and Slovakia, which had previously opposed the rapid cut-off of Russian oil supply, would be allowed to implement the sanctions for a longer time (until the end of 2023).
Von delaine said that the EU also proposed to cut off the connection between the Russian Federal Savings Bank (Sberbank) and two other banks and the international swift payment system.
The 27 EU Member States will meet on Wednesday to discuss and possibly approve the proposal. This will be the sixth round of EU sanctions against Russia.
Von delaine also proposed banning Russia's three major state-owned broadcasters from broadcasting programs in the EU. The package will also include banning "European accountants, consultants and public relations consultants" from providing services to Russian companies.
