Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said the company's plan to acquire Bungie was partly motivated by the hope that Playstation would become a more cross platform business. Although Sony interactive entertainment (SIE) has traditionally focused on developing games for Playstation platform devices, it has also begun to invest heavily in PC and mobile games in recent years.
Last year, Sie CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that Playstation would bring a "complete set" of games to PC. the company also hired the former content director of Apple arcade to lead a new business unit and apply its "most popular series" to the mobile field.
In January this year, Sony announced that it would buy Bungie, creator of halo and destiny, for $3.6 billion. Sony said at the time that Bungie would become "an independent subsidiary" and would remain a multi platform studio after the acquisition.
At the company's strategy meeting on Wednesday, Yoshida said the company had "high expectations" for Bungie. "We believe this will be a catalyst to enhance our online game services. Our acquisition of Bungie also represents a big step towards multi platform," he said
When the deal was announced, Bungie also said that although it was acquired, the Games currently being developed and future games are not only for the Playstation platform.
Will Sony's multi platform strategy extend to Xbox The launch of first-party games on the host platforms of competitors such as series X / s remains to be seen.
