HP has announced a laptop for developers: the HP Dev One, tentatively priced at $1,099.
According to the official website, the HP Dev One claims to be built entirely for developers, such as its pre-installed system, the Linux distribution Pop!_OS, and the availability of a customizable Linux keyboard that includes Super keys.
Hardware Information.
- 8-Core AMD Ryzen 7 PRO Processor
- DDR4 @ 3200MHz 16GB Memory
- 1TB PCIe NVMe M.2 Hard Drive
- 14-inch Full HD anti-glare display
- AMD Radeon graphics cards
While it's certainly good news for the Linux community and developers that a manufacturer of HP's magnitude is willing to build Linux notebooks, it also makes one wonder. After all, System76, the developer of Pop!_OS, is also an established Linux PC maker, also selling notebooks with Pop!_OS. Thus, HP and System76 are competitors in the hardware business.
In response, some tech media speculated that in the future HP would buy System76, or that System76 would sell its laptop business to HP and then focus on the desktop business itself.
