Google released its annual diversity report, and the company said it had made some positive progress in the past year According to chief diversity officer Melanie Parker, the company saw "the largest increase in black American and Hispanic Google employee representatives" - an increase of 20% and 8% year-on-year, respectively
Parker said Google also reported a 27% increase in leadership representation among black, Hispanic and Native American employees.
But some data show that Google still has more work to do. Women account for 33.5% of the company's U.S. employees and men account for 66.5%. These figures are only slightly different from the 32.2% women and 67.8% men reported in 2021. In the 2022 report, Google said that 48.3% of American employees were white, while 43.2% were Asian, 6.9% were Latin American, 5.3% were black and 0.8% were Native Americans.
"As we continue to build a more inclusive and representative Google, we will be responsible for how we strive to make our goals a reality," Google said
Google's diversity policy was reviewed after it fired timnit gebru, a well-known AI ethicist (he is black), in December 2020. Two months later, the company revised its diversity and research policy.
