At the opening ceremony of susecon, SUSE announced the release of SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 service pack 4. In SLE 15 SP4, it is worth noting that SUSE has switched to using NVIDIA's open source GPU kernel mode driver, which was opened by NVIDIA last month and is currently under active development, but there is still a long way to go before uploading it to the mainline kernel.
SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP4 implements googleslsa 4 supply chain compliance, adds support for AMD security encryption virtualization encryption state (sev-es), turns to the open source NVIDIA GPU kernel driver, and introduces Trento as a new sles function of SAP applications.
SUSE uses the open source NVIDIA GPU kernel driver to focus on the "cloud native world" and "SLE 15 SP4 is the first major Linux distribution to provide the driver". NVIDIA's open GPU kernel driver has been considered to be used in the production environment of r515 proprietary user space driver components of data center GPUs, but it has not been considered to be widely used for geforce GPUs of consumers.
Sles 15 SP4 is ready to support AMD sev-es, which sounds very good, although unfortunately it did not happen earlier. Sev-es was introduced into AMD epyc 7002 "Rome" processor. Since last year, AMD epyc 7003 "Milan" processor has adopted the latest sev iteration in the form of sev-snp "secure nested paging", and it has additional security advantages.
Finally, Linux 5.19 provides mainline support for sev-snp. Since amd launched Milan last March, it has released sev-snp patches on the external tree. It is hoped that AMD can better prepare timely sev patches (and enable other new functions) in the future, so that it can play a more timely role in Enterprise Linux distributions.
