Woods Berg and Miller hull partnership revealed plans to expand Seattle Tacoma International Airport, which will adopt a new expansion project of sustainable design, with special wood made of locally purchased Citi pine. The expansion of Hall C is designed to ensure that tired passengers can easily find their way around the airport. It will add 145530 square feet of dining and retail space, a prayer and meditation area, and a new set of airline lounges.
But its most striking feature is its interior decoration, which is inspired by the local, and will carve Douglas fir into complex curves to create a striking ceiling, a mezzanine and multiple seating areas.
"Inspired by the Pacific Northwest, the interior of the hall shows the interaction of the environment, which is determined by the local energy and connection with the natural landscape," woodsberg explained. "The design of the more active public space reflects the activity scenes of Seattle and the famous markets in the region. A market is located in the center of the hall, and the bar and retail kiosk frame an open seating area next to a stage for local musicians to perform. The stage faces the large stairs and provides a good view for the mezzanine restaurant."
Hall C expansion project will be owned and operated by Seattle port, with the goal of becoming the most environmentally friendly port in North America. With this in mind, the sustainable design theme in the plan includes a roof based solar cell array to reduce the consumption of the power grid by 15%. It also focuses on maximizing the use of natural light and reducing solar radiation through smart glass. Energy efficient heating and cooling systems will be used to maintain a comfortable temperature and minimize water consumption.
The expansion project of Hall C is expected to start construction in the middle of 2023 and be completed in 2027. Its budget is currently $340 million, up to $500 million.
