Sheryl Sandberg announced on Wednesday that she would resign as chief operating officer (COO) of meta, Facebook's parent company. Sandberg joined Facebook in early 2008, becoming the second person of the company's CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, and helping Facebook become an advertising giant and one of the most powerful companies in the technology industry. The company's market value once exceeded $1trillion.

Javier olivan, chief growth officer of meta, will take over as chief operating officer this fall. Sandberg informed Zuckerberg of her decision last weekend, and she will continue to serve on the board of meta.
Before joining Facebook, Sandberg worked in the Treasury Department of the Clinton administration, and then joined Google in 2001 to help develop its advertising business.
After the news was released, meta's share price fell by more than 4% in the short term.
