As the unbeaten world wrestling champion in the early 20th century, Gama pehlwan is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers in history and the Savior of many lives in a turbulent period in Indian history In his career spanning more than half a century, pehlwan won more than 5000 games and won him the title of "the great Gama".
To commemorate his sporting achievements, Google presented a graffiti for the Indian wrestler's 144 year old birthday on Sunday.
It is reported that pehlwan was born on May 22, 1878 in Ghulam Mohammad Baksh butt, now Punjab province, India. Every day, he does at least 3000 push ups, 5000 squats and wrestles with 40 other wrestlers - a training method inspired martial arts master Bruce Lee.
He first gained attention for his athletic ability at the age of 10, when he won a strong man competition with more than 400 wrestlers. At the age of 17, pelwan, who was 5 feet and 7 inches tall, competed with the popular 7 feet tall Indian wrestling champion. After several hours of competition, the two sides ended in a draw.
Pehlwan is a Muslim who saved hundreds of Hindus during the violence over the land division between India and Pakistan during the partition of India in 1947. He is said to have faced angry mobs in Lahore and paid for safe passage for hundreds of people from the colonies when the violence escalated.
After winning the world wrestling championship in 1927, pehlwan was awarded the title of "tiger" by his opponent. Pehlwan quit wrestling in 1952 because it was difficult to find a willing opponent. He died in Lahore in 1960 at the age of 82.
