Apple Carplay is now available for Tesla cars, but only for owners who are willing to adopt the solution of using the connected raspberry PI. Faced with Tesla's apparent indifference to repeated calls to introduce Carplay into its cars, Polish developer Micha ł Gapi ń Ski demonstrated his successful attempt to introduce Apple's car system into Tesla Model 3 earlier this year.
After six months of work, GAPI ń Ski has now released the first publicly available alpha version of "Tesla Android" on GitHub for others to download and try:
The solution involves using rasberry PI with LTE modem and Wi Fi access, running a custom firmware based on Android, as well as a micro HDMI to HDMI cable and Ethernet cable. Gapi ń Ski said that the main goal of the latest alpha version is to demonstrate usability. "In order for the project to expand and become popular in the Tesla community, it needs to provide a responsive Android experience. Otherwise, people won't use it," he said on his Tesla Android project website.
"Now the focus is on better integration and simplification," said GAPI ń Ski continued. "Giving up the requirement of two motherboards will help to reduce the cost and entry threshold, and reduce the installation guide to a level that can be completed in a few minutes.".
Although many other electric vehicles have Carplay, Tesla does not provide official support. In 2020, Tesla's hint that it planned to support Apple music never came true, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk didn't seem to respond to Twitter's request for the company to introduce Carplay into its vehicles, even though it was one of the most needed features among Tesla owners.
