According to BGR, a former NASA astronaut has proposed a plan to save the earth from the impact of the "killer" asteroid Dr. ed Lu, who holds a Ph.D. in Applied Physics, is trying to find a way to find dangerous asteroids and give sufficient warning in advance to make them deviate from the earth This is a noble effort that can work with other asteroid detection and deflection systems, such as NASA's d.a.r.t spacecraft.
On Tuesday, the B612 foundation announced the discovery of about 104 asteroids, some of which may be "killer" asteroids. B612 is a non-profit organization founded with the help of Dr. ed Lu. It is named after the home asteroid of the protagonist in Antoine de Saint Exupery's children's Book Little Prince.
Of course, the discovery of new asteroids is not really that exciting. After all, people have been reporting that large asteroids pass near the earth, many within millions of miles. Although we know all the asteroids, the B612 foundation has found more than 100 more. In addition, they found that these new asteroids were hidden in full view of the public. Therefore, the tool can be used to make it easier to find "killer" asteroids.
The tool does not rely on new telescopes or even new observations. Instead, it looked at old images stored in the digital archives of the national optical infrared astronomical research laboratory (noirlab). Then the researchers let the algorithm work, searching 412000 different images. Its aim is to screen out possible "killer" asteroids from the 68 billion cosmic light spots displayed in the image.
Although these discoveries are not necessarily the "killer" asteroids we need to worry about. However, this is a remarkable discovery because astronomers estimate that at least 25000 near Earth Asteroids with a diameter of at least 460 feet are floating in space.
Of course, only about 40% of the 25000 were found. This left about 15000 asteroids, some of which may become deadly asteroids, rotating in space and unknown. But with the B612 algorithm, NASA and other space agencies can find asteroids based on earlier images.
It is still possible to verify the information found. But it can make searching easier. Moreover, if any "killer" asteroid with a path set towards the earth is found, NASA and other space agencies will have more time to resist them.
NASA is testing its d.a.r.t spacecraft this year. It will try to change the path of the asteroid. China wants to do a similar defense measure and an asteroid monitoring system. With an expanded option to make it easier to find these asteroids, humans may have the opportunity to fight against any "killer" asteroids we find rushing towards the earth.
