Samsung today announced the latest mobile storage solution standard - Universal flash memory (UFS) 4.0. The new UFS 4.0 specification promises to improve the performance of mobile flash media storage to a higher level, and increase the reading speed to 4200mb / s, or basically twice that of the currently available UFS 3.1 standard Meanwhile, the write speed has been increased from 1200MB / s to 2800mb / s. Samsung said its actual performance will be 1.6 times that of the previous generation.

It should be noted that the performance figures of read and write referred to here are for sequential transmission, so the speed of random read and write may be slower.

Samsung can achieve this huge speed increase due to the combination of the channel transmission rate of 23.2gbps per second of UFS 4.0 and the seventh generation v-nand (vertical NAND) flash memory technology, which is composed of up to 176 layers. In terms of capacity, Samsung said that UFS 4.0 will have a version of up to 1TB.

Interestingly, UFS 3.1 has similar capacity, so it is possible that UFS 4.0 may allow more than 1TB of capacity when the technology is further mature. But for now, 1TB of ultra-high speed internal storage components should be enough, even the most expensive mobile phones Rarely more than 1TB.

Samsung also said that UFS 4.0 saves 46% more power than UFS 3.1 because it can provide a continuous reading speed of 6.0 MB / s per milliampere (MA), which is the best performance among mobile devices. All these advantages of storage space, performance and power efficiency will be encapsulated in a compact size of only 11mm x13mm X1 mm.

In terms of availability, mass production of UFS 4.0 is planned for the third quarter of 2022, which means that we may start to see mobile phones adopting this standard at the end of 2022 or early 2023.
