Apple has added a virtual memory swap function to the ipados 16, allowing applications on the M1 iPad pro and iPad air to use free and available storage space as additional memory to meet higher workloads. With ipados 15, some applications can use up to 12gb of memory on the M1 iPad pro, while the total physical memory of the M1 iPad Pro is 16GB.

With ipados 16 and virtual memory swap, Apple Mining the available storage space on the device is greatly increasing the amount of memory that applications can use.
For M1 iPad with 256gb or more storage space, applications can use up to 16GB of memory. Virtual memory switching and higher memory limit are part of a series of features of ipados 16. These new features, including stage manager, are unique to M1 iPad pro and iPad air.
Stage manager is a new way for users who want to have higher productivity to use iPad. It allows users to open multiple application windows at the same time and overlap each other. Stage manager also implemented full external display support on ipados for the first time.
The ipados 16 is currently available to developers and is scheduled for public testing in July. Ipados 16 will be available to all supported iPads later this fall.
