The alliance of digital foundations of India (ADIF) released a research report on the app store and Google play store. The conclusion is that these stores are powerful and it is difficult to determine what is fair pricing. Apple is an important contributor to the Indian economy, and even though it and Google's app store have been censored by regulators, they have recently expanded their local development.
Now ADIF has released a research report on Apple And how Google's application policies affect Indian developers.
"The dominant position enjoyed by the gatekeeper of the application ecosystem will seriously damage the competition and innovation of the market," sijo Kuruvilla George, executive director of ADIF, said in a statement. "It also has an adverse impact on the ecosystem in many ways. Therefore, it is commendable that legislators pay attention to such problems and actively take measures to solve the anti competitive behavior of large companies. It is urgent to take a balanced approach".
Announcing its findings, ADIF said that "there is an urgent need to ensure fair competition and improve the choices of developers and consumers". However, the full text of the 14000 word report then turned into a summary of specific antitrust cases being carried out in other countries, rather than proposing any action itself.
It has repeatedly mentioned that app stores "have difficulty determining fair commission rates", mainly because it says developers have little choice. "What is fair in the absence of competition? This is not a simple question, especially given the information asymmetry that plagues the relationship between developers and app store operators."
The report proposed to "determine the need for government intervention, if any", but did not do so later. Instead, the report repeats the sentence: "it is imperative to adopt a balanced approach" and concludes that any legislation "can pose its own set of challenges."
In addition, Apple has been revising its app store policy to deal with the regulation, although these changes usually pose only a small risk to the company's revenue.
