After Google was accused of Violating Illinois' privacy laws, local residents are now entitled to a $100million class action settlement The technology giant was accused of violating the state's biometric information privacy act by using its Google photos facial reconstruction tool.
Access:
Google uses this tool to classify faces found in photos by similarity. However, according to the lawsuit, the company did not obtain the consent of millions of users before using the technology. Therefore, Illinois residents who appear in app photos between May 1, 2015 and April 25, 2022 may be eligible for payment.
At present, it is not clear how much settlement money an individual will have. However, in Facebook's similar cases, 1.6 million people each received $200-400 in compensation. The amount of payment will depend on the quantity and validity of the claim. It is expected that the payment will be issued 90 days after the settlement is approved. The approval hearing is scheduled for September 28.
In a class action lawsuit filed last month, snapchat was also accused of Violating Illinois' privacy laws. It is not clear when (or whether) the case will move forward and may lead to reconciliation.
