Depp v. Hurd's libel case was adjudicated in Fairfax, Virginia, on Wednesday. The jury found that Hurd's articles published in the newspaper constituted libel against Depp. Depp would receive $10million in compensatory damages, plus $5million in punitive damages - but the judge reduced the punitive damages to $350000 according to the upper limit set by state law.
As Hurd initiated a counterclaim against Depp, the jury also supported one of the three propositions put forward by Hurd, that is, the statement made by Adam Waldman, Depp's former lawyer, constituted slander against Hurd, and Hurd will receive US $2million in compensatory damages without punitive damages.
Hurd came to the court to hear the judgment, and expressed disappointment at the judgment: "today, my disappointment is hard to express. What is particularly sad is that despite the mountain of evidence, it is still not enough to resist my ex husband's power and influence. The negative impact of the case makes me even more depressed. The judgment of the case is a retrogression for women, just like going back in time, and returning to the era when dare to speak women will be publicly humiliated."
Depp appeared at the Royal Albert Concert Hall in London to receive applause and cheers. After watching the judgment, he issued a statement saying: "Hurd's accusation has subverted my life and career. Six years later, the jury returned my life to me. I am so terrified."
Depp also expressed his gratitude for the support of all the Navy fans. "I am very grateful for the love from all over the world, as well as the massive support and care." the judgment made captain Jack "restore calm".
The picture shows the pirate ship parked outside the court before the judgment of the case is pronounced. The strength of Depp's assistance group can be seen. When Hurd and Depp divorced, they received 7million dollars in compensation, saying that they would donate all the money to the children's Hospital and the public rights alliance. The result was nothing. Hurd explained that the money should be kept to pay the legal fees for the lawsuit, and the previously promised donation can only be made in stages - the sea king lady is now so embarrassed that the donation has to be made in stages.
Depp's lawyers Camille Vasquez and Ben chew made a brief statement outside the court, thanking the jury for supporting the prosecution's appeal. Although the jury ruled that both sides should compensate each other, Depp obviously won the lawsuit this time. The jury members did not believe that Hurd had been abused. In the case of suing the sun in 2020, the British judge rejected Depp's accusation and held that the newspaper's title "wife beaters" had factual basis and did not constitute slander.
It is expected that the Hurd side will appeal, and its lawyers will raise objections to relevant decisions, such as the venue of the case.
Before, Hurd requested that the case be tried by the California court, but the judge ruled that the Fairfax court in Virginia would try the case based on the location of the electronic newspaper server.
