Recently, Guo Ke, a researcher at the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, found the tallest tree in China so far in the primeval forest of Abies fargesii in Yunnan during an investigation in Chayu County, Tibet According to several measurements by the UAV sling, the tree is 83.2 meters high and 207cm in diameter at breast height, exceeding the previously reported Bhutan pine (76.8 meters) in Tibet and Taiwan fir (81-82 meters) in Taiwan, China, setting a new record for the highest tree in China.

The newly discovered Yunnan yellow fruit fir forest is located in the mountainous and valley areas on both sides of the Chayu River in shangchayu Town, Chayu County, with an altitude of about 2300 meters. The community contains a large number of ancient yew, a wild plant under national first-class key protection, as well as epiphytic orchids, ferns and other plants.
The researchers said that the reason why the region can retain such a tall and intact virgin forest is due to superior climate and terrain conditions and little interference from human activities. A large number of tall trees and their communities and ecosystems here have important scientific research value and protection significance.
